Today, we’re starting with some exciting news from the Democratic front. We’ve recently gained another congressional seat in New York, previously held by the disgraced Santos. This seat was picked up by Tom Suatzi, a dedicated representative from New York’s third district. This victory brings the Republicans down to a two-vote majority in the House of Representatives, a gap we’re looking forward to closing this fall.
In other news, the latest job report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics has just been released. In December alone, 353,000 new jobs were created, bringing the total to 479,000 new jobs. With an unemployment rate of 3.7% and 1.3 jobs available per unemployed person, it’s a great time to get back to work and continue improving our country.
Economic indicators are also looking promising. Hourly earnings were up 0.6% in January, translating to more than a 7% increase on an annual basis. Inflation rates between 2.5 and 3.5% are also encouraging signs of a healthy economy.
I encourage everyone to take a moment to compare the price of gas from a year ago to today. Look at the different things that are said to cost more under Joe Biden’s administration, despite his tireless efforts to curb inflation.
As we wrap up today’s discussion, let’s reflect on the Democratic Party’s achievements. Democrats have won the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections, a record in American political history. In the last four presidential elections, we’ve averaged 51% of the vote compared to the Republicans’ 46%. This is our best run since FDR’s election over 80 years ago.
As Democrats, we’re ready to face the big issues head-on. We’ve recently sponsored and crafted a bipartisan bill aimed at resolving the immigration issues at the border. Despite the potential to close the border tomorrow if the president so designated, this legislation is being blocked because they want to give the “orange menace” something to run on in the fall. But we’re not backing down. Immigration is a crucial issue for us, and we’re committed to finding a solution.
The second major issue we’re tackling is choice. The right to choose has been taken away from women, even in Texas where the health and life of a woman meant nothing to them. This is not the pro-life party we believe in. We are the pro-choice party, and we’re confident that Democrats will win big on this issue in the fall.
There’s a lot to be optimistic about. As Democrats, we remain hopeful and focused every day. We’ve won more votes in seven of the last eight presidential elections, the best popular vote run in American political history. Since 2016, we’ve won all four elections, leading to the removal of the RNC chair. While winning back the White House, Senate, and House was a remarkable achievement in 2018 and 2020, our successes in the off-cycle elections of 2022 and 2023 have been even more impressive.
Stay with us. Stay focused. This is Dem Talk America, and we look forward to the next time. Thanks so much.
